HOUSE: BIRD

A Teapot

The teapot, an iconic object typology was designed, interpreted and explored within the creation of House Bird. Inspired by the Victorian architecture of Savannah Historic District, an assortment of different ceramic making methodologies were employed whilst maintaining the importance of functionality as a core design tenant.

Concept Development

The design language of the aesthetic was influenced by Victorian architecture in Savannah, GA, as well as the surrealist Baba Yaga work of artist David Hochbaum. The anthropomorphization of architectural structures with the combination of a bird serves as a juxtaposition on various levels, whilst harping on memory and dream-like states.

Fabrication

Employing an assemblage of varying ceramic techniques from wheel throwing to hand building, the creation of this teapot was a design exercise, merging the demands of functionality with aesthetics. Texture was created to further enforce architectural elements such as scalloped roof cladding, clapboard siding, as well as the addition of laser cut fencing for the widows walk. All elements were form-fitted, slipped and scored together to create a 1 liter volume teapot for all to enjoy.
